Mauretania

A country in northwestern Africa bordering the Atlantic Ocean, in the Sahel zone. Mauritania is mostly covered by the sands of Sahara (in more than 80%). It is the fourth most sensitive country in the world in terms of climate changes. The recurring cycles of long-term drought (resulting in degradation of natural resources) and the aggravating water deficit additionally contribute to lack of food safety, from which the country suffers. Although it is populated by only 4.4 million people, it is a classic example of the problem of hunger caused by poverty and insufficient production of food.

Overview:
  • one of the poorest countries in the world – in some of its regions, people live off less than 1.25 USD per day
  • due to the food deficit, the country has to import 70% of its food
  • 21% of children below 5 years of age suffer from chronic malnutrition
  • 8% of the population in the dry season – which lasts even 6 months – copes with lack of food security
In 2020, we helped

387

children suffering from hunger or moderate malnutrition
We also provided medical care to about

a dozen

people with disabilities

Good Factory has been involved in Mauritania since early 2019. We fund the operation of a feeding center run by the Congregation of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. In one of the poorest countries in the world, 80% of which is made up of Sahara sands, producing enough food to feed all 4 million citizens can be a challenge. As a result, one in three Mauritanians live below the poverty line, and one in four children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition. We’re there, on the ground, fulfilling our mission of supporting and leveling the playing field for the vulnerable.

Since January, the number of children in need of assistance arriving at the Kaédi center has doubled. Over a hundred have completed nutritional therapy programs and returned home since the beginning of the year. Thanks to your generosity, every month we are able to buy several dozen kilograms of rice, milk, flour, and beans, as well as cleaning supplies. Our sisters prepare nutritious meals according to a special recipe to help malnourished little bodies quickly compensate for dietary deficiencies. We also buy medicines and finance the hospitalization of the weakest children. But that’s not all – we continue our support once they have gained enough strength to go to school for the first time, by helping pay for tuition and school starter kits.

This is the only facility in the area providing this type of aid. If not for you, these children would never stand a chance.

Join us today to make an impact. Buy a therapeutic meal for a malnourished child to put an end to its suffering and to help nurture it back to health.
