Democratic Republic of Congo

The second largest country of Africa, full of paradoxes. On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

Overview:
  • 15,6 million people – 18% of the population suffer from hunger
  • 3,4 million children under 5 years are acutely malnourished
  • 41,8% million children under 5 years are stunted
  • 63,2% of children below 5 years of age and 41% of women  15-49 years are anemic
In 2023, we have saved approximately

550

people from starvation
We take in at least

Nothing is more outrageous than the fact that every year tens of millions of people around the world die of hunger. Every five seconds, a child under the age of five dies of starvation on a planet abundant with resources.

Hunger leads to a debilitating disease that robs its victims of the will to live, let alone seek help. To prevent this from happening, we are active in the Congolese village of Ntamugenga where we provide help to hungry children.

Every week, we help some 100 malnourished children. Last year, we saved 647 young patients. Our center is the only functional facility in the entire province of Northern Kivu.

Recently, we’ve been more and more severely malnourished children due to the difficult situation in the Congo, where the threat of military conflict has emboldened local criminals and rebels. The situation was exacerbated by the recent Nyiragongo volcano explosion, which has displaced more than 400,000 people.

We feed children, providing immediate relief, but we also provide long-term support. We train their parents and guardians on how to grow plants and teach them the basics of nutrition – last year alone, over 1,000 people took part in these workshops. We also visit patients in their homes to check if their guardians are following the feeding center’s recommendations and to help them plant their first crops to enrich their families’ diets. During these visits, our nurses weigh and examine children and tell the guardians that they will be back with an unexpected visit. With these measures, we hope to prevent further cases of malnutrition among children.
