Silver Medal in Tokyo for NIKA Olive Oil Is the Fruit of Refugees’ Work in Home Village

Greece

In 2015, 856,000 people passed through the Greek islands, and in 2017 and 2018 only just under 30 thousand (according to UNHCR). But 2019 brought already a growth – over 60,000 newcomers. Practice shows that you can get stuck in Lesbos for a good few years. Nikos and Katerina run a small restaurant on the island, where every refugee can feel at home and eat a meal for free.

Overview:
  • At the end of 2024, there were nearly 4,000 refugees in the camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. Almost 28% of them are children.
  • Since the beginning of 2015, 1,25 million refugees have arrived in Europe via the Greek islands.

“Water,” Nikos answers without hesitation when asked what they need most right now.

The silver medal in Tokyo filled the entire Home Village team with pride. Recognized NIKA—organic, artisanal olive oil, produced right here—owes its exceptional quality to a mixture of hard work and love for the land shown by our beneficiaries. Each fruit is touched as if touching memories. In their homelands, the earth fed them—they approach it with patience and respect. No technological shortcuts. Our NIKA is the liquid fruit of human hands—hands that know how to work, and work hard.

The autumn olive harvest is grueling and labor-intensive, but watering the trees in forty-degree heat in the middle of summer is no easier. Onur, James, and the rest of the team arrive at the farm at 6:00 AM. Once a week, they water each of the nearly thousand olive trees we’ve planted. After watering, they cover them with dry grass to prevent the sun from stealing the trees’ water. The surroundings are dry and scorching. Unbearable.

“We’re happy about the silver in Tokyo. Next year will be gold,” Nikos says with certainty, like a captain of a ferry to Piraeus.

Urgent help for seniors

Let’s save Laudy and Jean from homelessness

Their entire life savings have been wiped out by the economic crisis. They haven’t been able to pay rent for nine months. If the landlord loses patience, they’ll end up on the street - with nowhere to turn. We don’t want them counting down the days until eviction!
