Life Investment saves lives every day

Democratic Republic of Congo

The second largest country of Africa, full of paradoxes. On one hand, it is rich in natural resources (including cobalt, copper, coltan, crude oil, diamonds, gold); on the other hand, its inhabitants are among the poorest in the world. For decades, the DRC has been suffering from prolonged conflicts that have led to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world.

Overview:
  • 15,6 million people – 18% of the population suffer from hunger
  • 3,4 million children under 5 years are acutely malnourished
  • 41,8% million children under 5 years are stunted
  • 63,2% of children below 5 years of age and 41% of women  15-49 years are anemic
In 2023, we have saved approximately

550

people from starvation
We take in at least

80

children a week in our nutrition center

One of the main pitfalls in addressing the issue of hunger is to speak about it in an impersonal manner. It then becomes an abstract phenomenon, difficult to understand for people who have refrigerators and eat at least one meal every day. Hunger does not exist beyond the people who endure it, and these people have names and faces. For us, the problem of hunger is four-year-old Justine, who a fortnight ago arrived at our nutrition centre in the village of Ntamugenga in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She was in a state of severe starvation and the swelling that accompanies malnutrition had completely disfigured her face. She could hardly see through her eyes. Thanks to you, we were able to fight for her life. Today she is safe.

Tomorrow is World Food Day. This is an important day because it draws attention to an escalating food crisis that we cannot ignore. Already, 41 million people are at risk of starvation. This year alone, more than 950 million people in the world will not have enough to eat. 20 million children will be born malnourished. Five children every minute die from hunger, the most common causes of this being warfare and climate change.

Poverty and the problem of starving children in North Kivu is the result of the aggression of very active rebel groups. The fear of being kidnapped is greater than the fear of starvation. The fertile fields on the outskirts of the villages lie fallow. Even if, in desperation, someone dares to cultivate them, the fruits of their labour usually end up in the hands of bandits who regularly plunder the fields.

The problem of hunger is for us also the helpless look in the eyes of Grace. She came to us when, due to malnutrition, she became lethargic, lost interest in playing and basically stayed still all day. Can you imagine such a dispirited five year old?!

Your decision to buy into Life Investment truly saves lives every day. Among them was Baraka, who today smiled for the first time for a photo when we told her that we wanted to introduce her to friends from Poland who, like the team at the nutrition centre, fought with determination for her recovery thanks to the Life Investment.
