Mauritania
More than 90% of Mauritania is covered by Sahara sands. Recurrent droughts destroy natural resources, and domestic grain production meets only about a quarter of the country’s needs—the rest must be imported. Hunger stems from poverty and the country’s inability to feed its own population. Nouakchott, the capital, is one of the most neglected cities in the region. Children with disabilities remain hidden at home, and their mothers live with a deep sense of guilt and social exclusion.
Overview:
- One of the poorest countries in the world – about 5.8% of the population lives on less than USD 2.15 a day
- Domestic grain production covers only about 24% of food needs (around 76% comes from imports)
- About 25% of children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition
- 61% of the population experiences moderate or severe food insecurity, and about 12% are in food crisis (IPC Phase 3+)
- People with disabilities are largely invisible to the state—there is no systemic support, rehabilitation, or education for them
- Mothers of children with disabilities are commonly blamed and excluded—they often believe their child’s disability is a personal failure or a punishment

In Mauritania, shame is treated with dignity. But how to treat illness? For that, we need you.
In Mauritania, disability is often kept quiet. Hidden behind four walls, as if it were a mistake to apologize for. Charity is given “without looking in the eye” — a coin toss and a quick departure, so no one has to see the discomfort.
At Good Factory, we do the exact opposite. We look people in the eye. On the outskirts of Nouakchott, in the heart of the desert, we support Foyer de l’Enfance. It’s not just another care center. It’s a place where 200 children regain the right to be someone — not just a “medical case.” But for this oasis to survive, it needs fuel. That fuel is medicine. We are raising €5,000 for a year’s supply of essential medicines!

Why antipsychotic medications? Because peace is a luxury.
Many of the children in our care live with severe neurological disabilities. For them, the world is often too loud, too bright, too overwhelming. Without proper medication, their own nervous systems become a prison — leading to self-harm, anxiety, and episodes that cannot be soothed with a hug.
These meds are not about “quieting” children. They are a key to freedom. Thanks to them:
- The child stops hurting themselves and others.
- The physiotherapist can begin exercises because the body is no longer fighting back.
- The mother can finally take a breath, knowing her child is simply resting — not suffering.

Rescuing a child from hunger takes more than food
Another part of our pharmacy is a rescue kit for children who arrive severely malnourished. Rice and vegetables are not enough when a body has forgotten how to digest properly. We need protection to rebuild what hunger has destroyed.
Your donation will help fund:
- Antiparasitic meds: So the food a child eats nourishes their body, not “uninvited guests.”
- Protective antibiotics and therapeutic supplements (iron, vitamin A, folic acid): A body weakened by hunger loses its ability to fight bacteria and viruses. A simple infection can become life-threatening.
- Electrolytes and rehydration solutions: Malnutrition combined with diarrhea is one of the leading causes of death in Africa.
We’re building upward so life can continue below
Foyer de l’Enfance is bursting at the seams. We want to move our offices and sewing workshops upstairs, freeing up space on the ground floor for additional rehabilitation rooms. We want the mothers who sew and make jam with us to have a space of their own — where they are no longer seen only as “mothers of children with disabilities,” but as proud artisans.
But we cannot build a roof if we don’t first secure the foundation: the children’s health.
€5,000. That is the cost of a year of calm, relief from pain, and a chance to grow for 200 small heroes. Help us stock our pharmacy shelves.
